Book Review: Strange Pictures

I saw this at an out-of-town bookstore while I was on spring break and had to snap it up since I already read the other two books by Uketsu. So, Strange Pictures is the first published by the enigmatic Japanese horror writer, and I will say, of the three it feels like the weakest. Which makes sense, since it's the first, and a writer usually gets better the more they write and publish. It was still very good, a quick read, and a series of interconnected stories, with the wrap-up at the end showing how they all connect. I didn't find any moment of creepiness like I did with the proceeding two, but I did have a moment of "gasp, I see the connection!", which was fun.

Overall, it was not as creepy or as narratively dense as the other two, but still good enough to keep on my shelf. Now I want to know what Uketsu has planned for their next project.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
