Top Ten books I can't believe I haven't read yet
I've been thinking of participating in The Atsy Reader Girl's Top Ten Tuesday for the last couple of weeks, and this week's prompt felt perfect, since I'm trying to get back to my bookworm self that I've lost over the years1. So let's go!
The List (in two sections)
Books I own
- The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin - I watched the movie a long time ago and have always wanted to read the book, but for some reason have never gotten around to it.
- Brisingr & Inheritance by Christopher Paolini - (Cheating here, doing 2) I was obsessed with Eragon when I was a teenager2, but book three took so long to come out that I forgot about it, and now it's been so long I don't remember anything that happened in book one, which means I have to reread 2 chunky books before I can get to these 2.
- Dust by Hugh Howey - Loved books one and two, but it's been so long that I don't remember what happened, and now this book sits on my shelf, mocking me.
- The Brightest Fell by Seanan McGuire - Another series I've fallen behind on.
- The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien - I have read Fellowship and Two Towers, but for some reason have never gotten around to reading this one.
Books I don't own
- The Princess Bride by William Goldman - The movie is a favorite, how can I not want to read the book? How can I not have read it yet?
- Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey - I've read other McCaffrey books and loved them, and I love the idea of blending science fiction and fantasy, but for some reason Dragonflight is hard to find in libraries, so I haven't read it yet.
- Guardians of the West by David Eddings - The Belgariad was essentially my first introduction to epic fantasy as a teenager3, but despite loving it I never read the sequel series.
- Animal Farm by George Orwell - In college I took a class on dystopian lit, and came to love the genre. And yet, despite having read a great many classics of the genre, I have not picked up this one.
- The Dying Earth by Jack Vance - A classic of the science fiction/fantasy genre, and a great influence on later authors. I have wanted to read this for years, but haven't been able to because it is hard to find!
I fully blame visual media, which is easier and faster to consume, and since I'm inherently lazy, that's what my lazy bones picks before reading, usually. I'm in a desperate battle to fight it right now.↩
A homeschooled teenage writer obsessing over a homeschooled teenager publishing a book? Never would have guessed.↩
This is a whole story. We had just moved to a new area, it was Christmas time, and someone from our church did 12 days of Christmas gifts for our family anonymously. My Christmas day gift from that was Castle of Wizardry, book 4 in the series. So I read book 4 first, and then searched out the rest of the books at the library.↩
